The skateboard, a symbol of urban culture, often ends up wearing out after years of service. Rather than throwing away your old board, there are several creative and eco-friendly ways to give it a new life. Here are some ideas for recycling and reusing your skateboard while reducing your environmental impact.

1 - TURNING THE BOARD INTO A DECORATIVE OBJECT

Used skateboards can easily be transformed into unique and original decorative objects. One approach is to keep the board in its original condition in order to highlight its history, graphics and the marks left by years of use. It is also possible to transform or customize it to give it a new purpose and fully integrate it into your interior.

Here are a few ideas:

• Wall decoration: a skateboard can simply be displayed on the wall using a suitable mount. This solution is particularly interesting when the board has original graphics or a beautiful patina. If its appearance is less appealing, it can always be customized with paint. Masking tape and spray paint can be used to easily create geometric patterns or original compositions.

• Wall clock: a few modifications are enough to turn a skateboard into a clock. Simply drill a hole in the center of the deck to install a clock mechanism, then add a mounting system to hang it on the wall.

• Wall shelf: by attaching two shelf brackets underneath the board, it can easily become an original shelf. By positioning the brackets correctly, it may even be possible to reuse the truck mounting holes, avoiding the need to drill additional holes in the deck.

• Coffee table or bench: following the same principle, legs can be attached underneath the board to create a small coffee table or occasional piece of furniture. For a bench, however, you must make sure that the board is strong enough and suitable for supporting a person's weight.

• Coat rack: two or three hooks can be directly attached to the board to create an original coat rack. An even more skateboard-inspired solution is to keep a complete truck and its wheels, which can be used as supports for hanging clothes.

However, these transformations require starting with a board that is sufficiently strong and in good condition, particularly when it is intended to support weight, as in the case of a bench. A broken or excessively damaged board should not be used for this type of project.

It can nevertheless enjoy a second life as a wall decoration. Even a broken board can become an original piece by preserving its signs of use, or by being reworked, painted or incorporated into a decorative composition.

When a board can no longer be used as it is, it is also possible to take the transformation further by recovering its wood and various materials to create new objects. In this way, even a severely damaged board can find a second life in a new form.

2 - RECYCLING MATERIALS TO MAKE NEW OBJECTS

Recycling your skateboard can go much further than simply transforming it into a decorative object. The materials it is made of, particularly its maple wood, can be recovered and transformed to create new pieces.

This approach requires more work: used boards are generally cut, assembled or pressed together to form a new block of material. This material can then be worked like any other creative medium: cutting, machining, sanding, drilling and finishing can give it a completely new purpose.

One of the main advantages of this technique is its unique aesthetic appeal. The combination of the different maple veneers reveals lines and colors that create the characteristic multicolored patterns of recycled skateboard wood.

This material can also be combined with other types of wood, reclaimed materials or certain parts of the skateboard itself. Trucks, wheels and screws can therefore be reused to complete a creation while maintaining a connection with the original object.

Here are a few ideas:

• Recycled skateboard coasters: the colorful maple veneers can be used to create original coasters that are both practical and decorative.

• Jewelry, including earrings and necklaces: small pieces can be cut and sanded to create unique jewelry while preserving the different colors of the skateboard veneers.

• Magnets: small skateboard offcuts can be turned into decorative magnets for the refrigerator or any other metal surface.

• Small sculptures: pieces of skateboard can be assembled, carved or simply shaped to create unique decorative objects.

• Knife handles: recycled skateboard wood can be used to make knife handles, offering a colorful appearance and a comfortable grip.

• Keychains: maple offcuts are particularly well suited to making small, lightweight and durable keychains, allowing part of the skateboard's history to be preserved.

3 - GIVE THE BOARD TO A CRAFTSMAN, ASSOCIATION, OR SCHOOL

If you don't want to recycle your old skateboard yourself, consider giving it to someone who can give it a second life. Many craftspeople work with used skateboards to create furniture, decorative objects or new products, but may sometimes have difficulty sourcing old boards.

You can, for example, contact craftspeople who specialize in reusing skateboards, such as La Grange Workshop, Recycl’Art 79 or Fred Troisième Vie. Before travelling, however, remember to contact them to check whether they are currently looking for this type of material.

If your board is still rideable, a skateboarding association or skate school may also be interested. It can then be put back into use and enjoyed by young riders rather than being left unused.

Finally, some skate shops collect used or broken boards in order to pass them on to craftspeople, associations or local organizations. So don't hesitate to contact your local skate shop: they may be able to suggest the best way to give your skateboard a second life.

4 - CREATING ORIGINAL AND UNIQUE ARTWORK

Skateboard offcuts and old decks can also be reused in artistic projects to create trophies, framed artworks or sculptures made in collaboration with artists and other craftspeople.

The Merlin Skateboards workshop has had the opportunity to give this material a new life through several projects: trophies for the 2026 French Championships, a collaboration with artist Gaëlle Degaugue, and a project created in collaboration with shaper Lioukouma. These projects demonstrate how an old skateboard or even simple offcuts can become a genuine artistic material.

5 - RECYCLING YOUR SKATEBOARD BY REUSING ITS PARTS

Recycling is not limited to the deck. Trucks, wheels, bearings and hardware can also be reused in new projects. Some components can continue to be used on another skateboard, while others can be repurposed to create original objects.

Trucks, for example, can be incorporated into decorative creations or used as supports, while wheels can be reused as decorative or functional elements. This approach makes it possible to make the most of the entire skateboard and minimize waste.
